Dots Study — Generative Op Art
Generative dot compositions exploring Op Art perceptual effects. Sine waves modulate dot size and position across a grid — each generation produces a different point in the parameter space.
Inspiration
Inspired by Bridget Riley's Static series (1966) and ideas in Vertigo: Op Art and a History of Deception 1520 to 1970.
This was an early experiment in AI-assisted creative coding. Where Riley hand-painted each dot, I wanted to try the same thing algorithmically — start from a simple grid and see what emerges as you vary the rules. If her painting is one sweet spot, what do the wilder variations look like? I left the algorithm rough so viewers can explore and decide for themselves. As a study, the AI wasn't great at aesthetic judgment but was a fast partner for iteration.
